Packaging Guide

Proper packaging is essential to ensure your items arrive safely. Follow these guidelines to protect your shipments.

Essential Packaging Materials

Boxes

Use new, sturdy corrugated cardboard boxes. Reused boxes must be in excellent condition with all old labels removed.

Cushioning

Use bubble wrap, foam peanuts, or packing paper. Fill all empty spaces to prevent movement during transit.

Tape

Use strong packing tape (2-inch minimum width). Apply tape to all seams and edges. Do not use duct tape or masking tape.

Pro Tips for Packaging

  • Double box fragile items: Wrap items individually, then place in a box with cushioning, then place that box in a larger box with more cushioning.
  • Use the right amount of cushioning: Items should not move when you shake the box.
  • Seal all openings: Apply tape to the center seam and all edges of the box.
  • Test your packaging: Drop the packaged item from waist height onto a hard surface. If you hear movement or impact sounds, add more cushioning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between dimensional weight and actual weight?

Actual weight is the measured weight of the package. Dimensional weight (also called volumetric weight) is calculated based on package dimensions. We charge based on whichever is greater. This ensures fair pricing for lightweight but bulky items.

Formula: (Length × Width × Height) ÷ DIM Factor = Dimensional Weight

Our DIM Factor varies by service: Domestic = 166, International = 139.

How do I calculate shipping costs?

Shipping costs are based on several factors:

  1. Package dimensions and weight (chargeable weight)
  2. Origin and destination ZIP/postal codes
  3. Service level selected (express vs. ground)
  4. Additional services (insurance, signature confirmation, etc.)
  5. Fuel surcharges (varies monthly)

Use our online calculator for accurate pricing.

What happens if my package is damaged?

If your package arrives damaged:

  1. Inspect immediately: Check contents in the presence of the driver if possible
  2. Document damage: Take photos of the packaging and damaged items
  3. Keep all packaging: Do not discard damaged boxes or packing materials
  4. File a claim: Report damage within 30 days of delivery
  5. Provide documentation: Submit photos, receipts, and repair estimates

Note: Proper packaging is required for claim eligibility.

Can I ship liquids or fragile items?

Yes, but special precautions are required:

For liquids:

  • Use leak-proof containers with secure lids
  • Wrap each container individually in plastic
  • Place in waterproof bags with absorbent material
  • Use "This Side Up" and "Fragile" labels

For fragile items:

  • Use double boxing method
  • Provide at least 2 inches of cushioning on all sides
  • Use corner protectors for framed items
  • Mark "FRAGILE" on all sides of the box
